John died March 9, 2011 in Gainesville, Texas where he was living. The cause of death was Emphasema. He is survived by his son, Keith Thomas Merrick and wife Diona Dornak Merrick of Richmond, Texas; grandson Keith T. Merrick, Jr. and daughter Sarah Merrick as well as granddaughter Parker Rose Merrick
